Mobile Message – “a series of blog posts about how mobile phones are being used throughout the world to improve, enrich, and empower billions of lives” – has this dispatch about how SMS is filling the void in places where not even mobile voice gets through.

The author says it’s an economic movement that is making new markets:

“African technology is being used to power agricultural markets across Africa, filling an ‘information void’ for local farmers (who) … had no choice but to blindly accept the prices offered by traders. But the recent and sudden ability to refer to current prices across the country disrupts that whole dynamic.”

One suspects more than markets are in play. Can civil society be so far behind?  Read the whole thing here (h/t National Geographic).
